The Maroons take a significant risk by acquiring new recruit Isah Mayari, who initially struggles to perform well, frustrating the team's determined coach, Peter Fitzgerald. As the club's performance deteriorates, Peter's coaching position hangs in the balance, with the possibility of his days being numbered.
Club president Freddie Mac Intosh is compelled to resign after making a racist comment about one of his own players (Isah). While this incident could have been contained, various board members, notably Jack, a club board member and former senior coach, and Perry, the club's CEO, who engage in backstabbing and machinations that exacerbate the situation, leak an audio recording of the comments the press.
During this time Peter Fitzgerald discovers the board's intention to dismiss him, stemming from a longstanding grudge held by Jack. To counter this, Peter takes it upon himself to inspire Isah, who is caught between the pressures of religious beliefs and his own sexual identity, leading to a profound struggle with mental health, to elevate his performance.
Jack harbours jealousy towards Peter, as he came close to surpassing Jack's club record of 325 games, whilst he was Peter's coach during his playing days. Furthermore, Jack had lost a precious Grand Final, when Peter was club captain, due to poor decisions made under the influence of drugs and alcohol. In an act of vengeance, Jack attempts to undermine the club's success by any means necessary.
In retaliation, Peter publicly exposes Jack's drug addiction and drunkenness, leading to his potential dismissal as coach. However, as the team starts winning and ultimately reaches the grand final, to be played against Melbourne, Peter's coaching skills are recognised by Perry, who highlights the questionable motivations of Jack who has sought to oust him.
